I like being exempt from something...I wish it was from work though. Or calories from the Red Velvet Cake. But I digress.

Okay, good - there is some entertainment value then, I can go with that, I can work with it.

I do agree though that the "eating a sandwich" or "just dropped my pen" just makes me wonder. Where's the creativity? Can't they at least say "eating a sandwich made of earthworms sauteed in a wine reduction sauce. Still tastes earthy" -or- "just dropped my pen down my boss' pants and had to retrieve. Awkward. But did get a raise, literally and figuratively."

I mean, COME ON people. Ya know? Rant

Most importantly - CONGRATS on that baby!!!! All the best to you, your lovely wife, and the mini-human! :)))))

Well said. It's funny, I've recently been embroiled in a different version of this conversation, and it was refreshing to read your take.

It reminded me of a post from Alanna Shaikh at http://bloodandmilk.org/. She wrote:

"We’re all in this together. We’re not in this line of work because we want to help far-away strangers. We’re in it because, in the end, we’re one big blob of people on one scarred messy planet, and no one is truly healthy when others are bleeding. We are connected; there’s no way around it. It’s time to make that connectedness a source of strength."

This is superb advice, even for someone like me. I'm one of those dreaded designers that has been tossed around in the vicious "Not enough experience, but can't get experience, because I don't have any experience" cycles. Since I am currently unemployed, I'm using these tough economic times to dramatically improve my online/print portfolio and to learn a new skill or two. I'm hoping that my persistence will pay off eventually.

I'm not here to knock traditional media as I agree with Simon above that they remain a good source of details for the story -- after the news has broken. But yes, for breaking news I believe that is something they can no longer claim unless they're serious about keeping up with the twitter timeline.

When @breakingnewson first broke the story it was literally 20 full minutes until local Denver news had it updated on their site. During those 20 minutes some folks on Twitter were even replying to me questioning whether the news was true since they couldn't find it mentioned anywhere else online.

**side note in addition to Mumbai, Twitter was also the first to hear about the earthquake earlier this year in Southern Cali with some folks including myself tweeting it as things were still shaking!**

So while this doesn't spell the end of good journalism, I think traditional media needs to accept that their claim to being a source of "breaking news" is misleading now that Twitter has taken over that function.

Yo dude,

Nice little blog you have going here. I enjoyed reading about the new gig and your tough decision to close shop and go work for someone else. I've been on the other side for a long time, wanting to go work for myself for a long time but carefully considering the decision. Obviously at this time I haven't made the jump, and your comments have given me more to think about...

The honeymoon sounds fantastic!

Brad

Once you're recovered, there's a great run at the north tip of the island. Head up to Nungwi. You can run along the beach several miles. Try to hit mid-tide, when the water laps at your heels as you run. If the tide is too high, there are places where you'll have to swim for it!
